National Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicines (NAPPMED)

Every year, approximately 100,000 children in Nigeria die needlessly from diarrhea, the 2nd leading cause of child deaths globally which can be easily prevented with simple treatment, zinc and oral rehydration salts (ORS). The National Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicines (NAPPMED) oversees the operations of private patent medicine vendors (PPMVs) across all 36 States of Nigeria and educates its members on general principles of primary health care delivery to ensure quality service delivery. Leveraging this network, NAPPMED is committing to improving the knowledge and skills of its members in the management of childhood illnesses including diarrhea by working with relevant state- and local-level partners. Specifically, it will use its regular meetings to deliver training and promotional messaging to all of its members. NAPPMED also commits to improving the availability of zinc and ORS by working with suppliers to deliver promotional messages and point-of-sale materials to its members.

This historic commitment is part of the Coalition for Childhood Essential Medicines in Nigeria launched in October 2012, which has potential to save the lives of over 200,000 children in Nigeria by 2015. The coalition supports the Government of Nigeria’s Saving One Million Lives Initiative and the Every Woman Every Child movement.
