As part of its commitment to the UN Secretary General’s Every Woman Every Child Movement, McCann Health collaborated with the United Nations Foundation and the Cannes Lions Festival on June 13-14 2014 to highlight the importance of creating demand for health products and services, and empowering women as critically important to achieving better health outcomes. At Lions Health, UNF CEO Kathy Calvin moderated a discussion between Her Excellency Toyin Saraki (former First Lady Kwara State Nigeria, Wellbeing Foundation founder, and Global Ambassador International Confederation of Midwives) and Derk Hendriksen (General Manager, EKOCENTER, The Coca-Cola Company) on the role of creativity and women’s empowerment to reach better health outcomes. That discussion and the many subsequent discussions amongst global creative directors of some of the world’s best advertising and marketing agencies reinforced the untapped potential for the public sector to engage creative agencies in empowering health consumers.


2014- Every Newborn Action Plan

McCann Health is committed to working in partnership with the public and private sectors to design, develop, and implement large-scale demand creation and communications programs across Africa and Asia in support of the Every Newborn Action Plan. This commitment builds upon their 5 year, USD $5 million commitment in 2012 to the UN Secretary General’s Every Woman Every Child InitiativeMcCann Health is working with its partners to build capacity within governments and NGOs; increase care-seeking behavior and uptake of medicines to treat pneumonia and diarrhea in infants and children and prevent HIV infection; improve birth outcomes through improved nutrition in adolescents and in pregnancy; and reduce birth complications and improve outcomes through better birth preparedness. Much of this work is directed toward improving the health and well-being of newborns.

Outcomes of these efforts will include, among others, a completed communications platform for all partners involved in fighting childhood diarrhea and pneumonia in the 10 highest burden countries; increased awareness and utilization of ZincORS in the 10 highest burden countries; development of a market shaping campaign for improved nutrition in woman of reproductive age in Ghana; creation and deployment of Being Prepared for Birth demonstration campaign in Nigeria (pending resource and implementation partners); and stronger capacity within government agencies and NGOs to plan, develop, manage, and measure impactful communications campaigns.


Every year, approximately 100,000 children in Nigeria die needlessly from diarrhoea, the 2nd leading cause of child deaths globally which can be easily prevented with simple treatment, zinc and oral rehydration salts (ORS). With a committment of up to $1 million in leveraged resources, McCann Health will work in partnership to support the design and implementation of innovative demand-generation campaigns reaching target audiences in Nigeria. These resources will be realized through formalized public-private partnerships bringing in leveraged resources such as significant pro bono and value added services, reduced agency personnel and production-related fees on contracted services, access to McCann Health’s worldwide network of communications professionals, innovations and proprietary methods to help significantly increase the demand for high quality healthcare products and services among women and their families.

This historic commitment is part of the Coalition for Childhood Essential Medicines in Nigeria launched in October 2012, which has potential to save the lives of over 200,000 children in Nigeria by 2015. The coalition supports the Government of Nigeria’s Saving One Million Lives Initiative and the Every Woman Every Child movement.
