Millions of girls in developing countries to be protected against cervical cancer thanks to new HPV vaccine deals

A new record low price for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines will help ensure millions of girls in developing countries can be protected against cervical cancer. The GAVI Alliance is imlpementing its 2010 commitment in support of Every Woman Every Child in part by ensuring that the poorest countries will now have access to a sustainable supply of HPV vaccines for as low as US$ 4.50. UN Secretary-General: Every Woman Every Child is both a global and local movement

At a May 7th "Taking Action" Summit, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke about his own commitment to improving women's and children's health, and emphasized the importance of private sector leaders who understand the importance of corporate social responsibility and giving back – and who believe in taking action. "Every Woman Every Child...is a pioneering example of a new way of tackling common global challenges," he said. New UNICEF Nutrition Report: Stunting in children can be defeated

A new UNICEF report issued this week offers evidence that real progress is being made in the fight against stunted growth – the hidden face of poverty for 165 million children under the age of five. The report shows that accelerated progress is both possible and necessary. "Improving Child Nutrition: The achievable imperative for global progress" confirms that a key to success against stunting is focusing attention on pregnancy and the first two years of a child’s life. WHO and UNICEF launch Integrated Global Plan to end preventable deaths from pneumonia and diarrhoea by 2025

Pneumonia and diarrhea together account for 29 percent of all child deaths globally, resulting in the deaths of more than two million children each year. Countries most affected can end this staggering and unnecessary death toll by fighting the two diseases together in an integrated approach. The Integrated Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia and Diarrhoea (GAPPD), by WHO/UNICEF, goes to the heart of the challenge by recognizing that the only way to combat these two preventable diseases is to not address them separately, but fight them together in an integrated approach. Forbes India this week shines a spotlight on "Sankalp", the Indian Private-Public Partnership aiming to prevent 200,000 child diarrhea deaths in India by 2015. Sankalp involves more than 50 partners, communication among whom is enhanced by an “Innovation Co-creation Platform” created by Infosys and launched by the UN Secretary-General at Davos in 2013.
