Every year, 303 000 women die during pregnancy and childbirth, 2.7 million babies die during the first month, and there are 2.6 million stillbirths. Nearly all babies who are stillborn and half of newborns who die do not receive a birth or death certificate, and thus have never been counted. As a result, we often do not know the numbers or causes of these deaths, and how to prevent them.
