GA High-Level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of NCDs

19-20 September 2011

On September 19-20, prior to the opening of the General Debate, the General Assembly (GA) will convene a high-level meeting on Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs), focusing on "developmental and other challenges and social and economic impacts, particularly for developing countries". The meeting will consist of plenary meetings as well as three thematic roundtables, which will discuss: 1) The rising incidence, developmental and other challenges and the social and economic impact of NCDs and their risk factors; 2) Strengthening national capacities, as well as appropriate policies, to address prevention and control of NCDs; and 3) Fostering international cooperation, as well as coordination, to address NCDs. The meeting will result the adoption of a Political Declaration, as agreed by Member States.

On the sidelines of the high-level meeting, various side events will be organized by the World Health Organization, as well as Member States, civil society and the private sector. Several of the events are expected to make the linkages between improving women's and children's health and NCD control, touching on issues such as the adaption of service delivery platforms, integration of health systems, importance of nutrition, and role of health workers, among other topics.
