International Day of the Girl Child
Theme: EmPOWER Girls: Girls in emergencies
Each year, 15 million girls are forcibly married before the age of 18, which is 28 girls every minute. This practice violates girls’ rights to health, education and opportunity, while exposing them to life-long violence and poverty.
The International Day of the Girl Child is observed for concentrating on the importance of collecting and analyzing girl-focused data for understanding the opportunities and challenges that girls face, and identifying and tracking progress towards solutions for them. The theme this year will recognize the potential of the SDGs for girls but will also focus on the existing gaps in data that is needed to accurately monitor and communicate the wellbeing of girls everywhere.
There will be events taking place around the world to support girls in emergencies and celebrate the resiliency of girls and the roles of all stakeholders to empower girls as advocates for ending violence against girls (EVAG).
